An adrenaline-filled excursion for true trekking and mountain enthusiasts, taking you through one of the most fascinating and challenging routes on Mount Etna. Starting from Rifugio Sapienza, we begin our journey by crossing the craters formed during the 2001 eruption, an event that significantly impacted the area, partially destroying the infrastructure near Rifugio Sapienza. This section allows us to closely observe the most recent lava flows and understand the power of the volcano.
Continuing on, we head towards the Crateri Calcarazzi, a group of pyroclastic cones offering a spectacular view of Etna’s lunar landscape. From here, the trail leads to the Canalone della Rina, which will take us to the breathtaking Valle del Bove, ending at Acqua Rocca degli Zappini. This itinerary is reserved for experienced hikers, requiring good physical fitness, a steady step, and mountaineering experience.
The excursion begins at Rifugio Sapienza, located at 1,910 meters above sea level, a key starting point for many explorations of Etna. The trail follows the Canalone della Rina, providing an initial immersion into the volcanic environment, surrounded by lava flows and lunar landscapes. The route becomes progressively more challenging, with continuous ascents and descents across ancient lava flows, leading up to the spectacular Valle del Bove.
From the Serra del Salifizio ridge, a breathtaking panoramic view of Valle del Bove opens up. This massive caldera was formed due to a series of structural collapses and changes appearance with the seasons, offering unique landscapes year-round. Here, we will take a break to admire the impressive volcanic scenery, featuring historical lava flows and active fumaroles.
Continuing along the path, we reach Acqua Rocca degli Zappini, a smooth 40-meter-high basaltic wall, a true paradise for climbing enthusiasts. For those who prefer not to climb, an alternative trail allows hikers to bypass the wall and ascend to the crest of Valle del Bove, from where an unparalleled view of the summit craters and the valley below can be enjoyed. After a short break, the trek continues downhill to the final destination, concluding this incredible adventure through the wonders of Mount Etna.
