A Unique Experience Among the Most Fascinating Volcanoes of the Mediterranean

A three-day journey through the Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna, discovering breathtaking landscapes, lava flows, active craters, and surreal scenery. An adrenaline-filled tour combining trekking, nature, and history, taking you across lands shaped by fire.

 

Day 1 – Vulcano and Stromboli: Exploring the Islands of Fire

Our adventure begins with a hike on Panarea, the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, known for its wild volcanic landscape and stunning views of Stromboli. The loop trek will take us through sheer cliffs, trails immersed in Mediterranean scrub, and unique panoramic viewpoints. Along the way, we will admire Stromboli in the distance, with its unmistakable plume of smoke. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Church of Saint Peter and Panarea’s port.

 

In the afternoon, we will move to the island of Stromboli for a spectacular trek to the Sciara del Fuoco, the famous lava slope where the volcano’s erupted material accumulates. The itinerary will lead us along narrow white paths, passing unique viewpoints like Belvedere Strombolicchio, before reaching one of the most thrilling spots of the hike: the Sciara del Fuoco. Here, we will witness the volcano’s intermittent explosions, an incredible natural phenomenon that makes Stromboli one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

 

Day 2 – Panarea: Trekking on the Wild Island

The second day will be entirely dedicated to exploring Panarea, with a trek through pristine trails and breathtaking views of Stromboli. The hike will start along a scenic route offering incredible views of the sea and the island’s rock formations. We will pass through spectacular cliffs, the Archetto rock formation, and the Wild Trail, a path surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation.

 

Along the way, we will stop at Cala Zimmari and Spiaggetta di Drautto, two stunning bays with crystal-clear waters. The journey will conclude with a visit to the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, before returning to the port.

 

Day 3 – Mount Etna: The Ascent to the Craters

The final day will be dedicated to an unforgettable excursion on Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. We will explore the craters from the 2002/2003 eruption, an area featuring a dramatic lunar landscape. The hike will continue up to the Barbagallo Craters (approx. 2,800 m), a strategic point offering an incredible panorama stretching from Taormina to Syracuse. From here, we will have a clear view of the Summit Craters, which constantly emit gas and steam.

 

The route will lead us across recent lava flows, including the one from August 14, 2023, until we reach Torre del Filosofo (2,910 m), where we will take a break for a quick snack. The final part of the trek will bring us to the most recent eruptive fissure, formed in February 2025, giving us the opportunity to witness the latest transformations of the volcano. After this incredible experience, we will return to our starting point, concluding our journey among the giants of fire.

 

DIFFICULTY: Medium. Suitable for those accustomed to walking on uneven and occasionally steep terrain.

NOT RECOMMENDED for those with vertigo, people with a highly sedentary lifestyle, and children under 10 years old.
