Detailed description

Day 1 

Departure from Malta every friday at 06.30 arrival in Pozzallo. transfert with bus Virtu Ferries at port of Catania

Accommodation in the hotel in the center of Catania.

Day 2

Excursion Siracusa Ortigia e Noto 8h duration.

The excursion will begin with the visit to the Archaeological park of Neapolis (from Greek “new city”) that hosts the majority of classical monuments of Greek and Roman Syracuse.

It’s the most representative area of the ancient Greek city, with large green spaces from where, walking through an old Roman street, you can get to many important archaeological monuments: the Greek theatre used for classical performances, the Roman amphitheatre, the Latomie with the Ear of Dyonisius and Cordary’s cave, the Ara of Ierone and The Church of San Nicolò ai Cordari.

You will then continue by visiting the Ortygia Island, the heart of Syracuse, and among Greek temples, Christian churches, Arabian Streets, important old palaces, you will visit The Arethusa Fountain and the Duomo square, surrounded by some beautiful baroque palaces

After lunch (not included in the price), you will head for Noto, a unique town for its Sicilian Baroque style, which was declared to be a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The town of Noto is a true "open air museum", where it will be possible to enjoy the walk along the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and admire the many palaces and churches that are together known as the "stone garden". 

Day 3

Excursion Etna and Wine 7h duration.

After being picked up from your hotel you will head for Rifugio Sapienza, stopping in certain view points on the way up. The guide will give you all the information you need about the history and the territory of the volcano and you will visit the sites of the last eruptions and the old Silvestri Craters.

From Rifugio Sapienza (1920 mamsl) you can choose one of the following options:

  • Do some trekking in one of the nature paths of “Parco dell’Etna”, up to 2000 m.
  • Buy the Etna high altitude option: from Rifugio Sapienza you will take the cable car and reach, in 15 minutes, 2504 meters. From here you will continue with special 4x4 minibuses and reach, in 20 minutes, 2900 meters (Torre del Filosofo). You will find your self in front of a scenery stretching right down to the sea. Here it will be possible to admire the great central crater, the South-East crater and the historical lava flows that characterize the landscape of Etna. With the alpinist guides you will visit the places where the life of the volcano flourishes, in full safety. You will return to Rifugio Sapienza by minibus and cable car.

The excursion will continue with the visit of a lava cave with helmets and torches and will then end by visiting of one of the best wineries of the volcano, where you will sample of one sparkling wine and four glasses of local wines, with cold cuts, cheese, pate and olive oils produced locally.

Day 4 

Excursion Giardini Naxos, Castelmola and Taormina 5h duration.

The tour will begin by visiting the fishing town of Giardini Naxos, the first Greek colony in Sicily, founded in 734 b.C.

After driving along the seafront and enjoying the beautiful Naxos bay, you will head for Castelmola, but first you will stop at the wonderful “Isola Bella”, a Wildlife Reserve considered the “pearl of the Ionian” for its natural beauty, connected to the mainland by a thin strip of sand. From here it is possible to admire the bay, and the promontories of Capo S. Andrea, that hosts the renowned Grotta Azzurra (The Blue Cave), and of Capo Taormina. It may be possible to bathe in these marvellous crystal clear waters. 

In Castelmola you will walk along the characteristics streets of the town, and stop to see the ruins of the imposing Norman walls and the main square (Duomo) with the Mother Church, rebuilt between 1934 and 1935 on the existing cathedral and dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari.

The last part of the excursion will be dedicated to visiting the picturesque town of Taormina. 

Along the main road of this town, Corso Umberto, with the Messina Gate below and the  Catania Gate on the mountain side, you will admire the most important monuments: Palazzo Corvaja (The Corvaja Palace) (Museum of Arts and Folk Traditions*), the Teatro Antico* (The Old Theatre), Piazza IX Aprile, the Torre dell’orologio (The Clock Tower), the Cattedrale Fortezza (The Fortress Cathedral), the Badia Vecchia (The Old Abbey), and the Palazzo Duca di Santo Stefano (The Duke of Saint Stephen Palace), and much more. It will also be possible to go shopping in the exclusive shops which alternate with workshops.

You come back at your accommodation in Catania at 2 pm

At 6.30 pm appointment to the port of Catania where the bus wait to you for the coming back to Pozzallo for the Catamaran and arrive in Malta at 11.15 pm
