Detailed description

Day 1 

Departure from Malta every Monday at 06.30 arrival in Pozzallo, transfer with the Virtu Ferries Bus to the port of Catania.

Accommodation at the Aparthotel or hotel in the center of Catania.

Day 2

Excursion Siracusa Ortigia and Noto 8h duration.

The excursion will begin with the visit to the Archaeological park of Neapolis (from Greek “new city”) that hosts the majority of classical monuments of Greek and Roman Syracuse.

It’s the most representative area of the ancient Greek city, with large green spaces from where, walking through an old Roman street, you can get to many important archaeological monuments: the Greek theatre used for classical performances, the Roman amphitheatre, the Latomie with the Ear of Dyonisius and Cordary’s cave, the Ara of Ierone and The Church of San Nicolò ai Cordari.

You will then continue by visiting the Ortygia Island, the heart of Syracuse, and among Greek temples, Christian churches, Arabian Streets, important old palaces, you will visit The Arethusa Fountain and the Duomo square, surrounded by some beautiful baroque palaces

After lunch (not included in the price), you will head for Noto, a unique town for its Sicilian Baroque style, which was declared to be a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The town of Noto is a true "open air museum", where it will be possible to enjoy the walk along the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and admire the many palaces and churches that are together known as the "stone garden".

Day 3 

Excursion the godfather 7h duration.

The tour will begin with the visit of Savoca, one of the most picturesque medieval villages of Sicily, inserted in the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy since 2008. Also named Terra Ferace of gagliardi ingegni and country of seven faces, this delightful city of Art has been chosen as a set for several very important films, including “Godfather”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. We will start from one of the most important places in Savoca, the Vitelli Bar, then go on a stroll through the alleys of the village, immersed in a suggestive landscaping setting. We will admire the ruins of an ancient Synagogue, a precious bifore in a pure fifteenth-century style, and we will reach the historic center of the country, which, according to some historians, is rooted in Roman times. We will visit the church of San Nicolò, built in the 13th century and restructured in the eighteenth century, where some well-known scenes of the renowned cinematic work were also filmed. The tour will continue with the visit of the crypt of the Convento de Cappuccini, where some embalmed saints of the notorious savocados dating back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century are preserved and exposed.

We will continue by moving to Forza D’Agrò, immersed in the homonymous D’Agrò Valley. During the journey you will be able to enjoy a breathtaking view and admire the obvious traces of an intense and previous farm activity which took place in the valley thanks to the terraces. We can also enjoy a beautiful panorama that opens towards the Ionian coast. Here, we will make a small stop to visit the Cathedral of Mary S.Annunziata and Assunta dating back to the 15th century immersing ourselves even more in a pure medieval context that exudes the Sicilian tradition at every corner.

The excursion will end with some free time to visit the picturesque town of Taormina. Along the main road of this town, Corso Umberto, with the Messina Gate below and the  Catania Gate on the mountain side, you will admire the most important monuments: Palazzo Corvaja (The Corvaja Palace) (Museum of Arts and Folk Traditions*), the Teatro Antico* (The Old Theatre), Piazza IX Aprile, the Torre dell’orologio (The Clock Tower), the Cattedrale Fortezza (The Fortress Cathedral), the Badia Vecchia (The Old Abbey), and the Palazzo Duca di Santo Stefano (The Duke of Saint Stephen Palace), and much more. It will also be possible to go shopping in the exclusive shops which alternate with workshops.

Day 4 

Etna Nature and flavours 6h duration

After being picked up from your hotel you will head for Rifugio Sapienza, stopping in certain view points on the way up. The guide will give you all the information you need about the history and the territory of the volcano and you will visit the sites of the last eruptions and the old Silvestri Craters.

From Rifugio Sapienza (1920 mamsl) you can choose one of the following options:

  • Do some trekking in one of the nature paths of “Parco dell’Etna”, up to 2000 m.
  • Buy the Etna high altitude option: from Rifugio Sapienza you will take the cable car and reach, in 15 minutes, 2504 meters. From here you will continue with special 4x4 minibuses and reach, in 20 minutes, 2900 meters (Torre del Filosofo). You will find your self in front of a scenery stretching right down to the sea. Here it will be possible to admire the great central crater, the South-East crater and the historical lava flows that characterize the landscape of Etna. With the alpinist guides you will visit the places where the life of the volcano flourishes, in full safety. You will return to Rifugio Sapienza by minibus and cable car.

The excursion will continue with the visit of a lava cave with helmets and torches.

The last stop, before returning to the hotel, will be Zafferana, where you will visit one of the most famous organic farms for a delicious sampling of typical products such as honey, wine, oil etc. 

Day 5 

Catania Street Food durata 3 h duration

The journey between the flavors, the aromas and the gastronomic traditions of Catania starts at the “4 Canti”, historical crossroads of the city between Via Etnea and Via di Sangiuliano, at the four corners of which rise palaces belonging to the noble families of Catania. You will continue on Via Etnea, the main street of Catania, to reach Piazza Duomo and admire the wonderful cathedral, the famous fountain of the elephant “o liotru”, symbol of the city, and the Amenano fontain;

where from you will arrive at the fish market. Here Salvo will wait you and prepare carefully, according to the family tradition, cold cuts and cheese appetizer combined with an excellent house wine.  After a stroll in the fish market, among the fresh fish stands, another stop will allow you the tasting of anchovies, tomatoes and garlic.

Leaving the fish market you will continue to the baroque Via dei Crociferi, a small jewel of art with its several churches, many times immortalized by the greatest Italian filmmakers. Then you will reach Via Manzoni and Piazza Stesicoro, where you will find the second biggest Roman Amphitheater in Italy and where you can still admire its ruins.

Continuing along Via Etnea, its name comes from the volcano Etna, visible from the beginning to the end of the boulevard, you arrive at Via Pacini, a small road, where there is the bakery, that since generations prepares the best “Arancini” and “Cipolline” of all the city.

Once this tasting is over and crossing the caracteristic market of “Fera o Luni”, you will get to Piazza Turi Ferro, at one of the traditional Kiosks for a delicious lemon seltz, typically and refreshingly summer drink, essential to digest what you just ate.

Last stop will be Piazza Università with the magnificent “Palazzo of the Univerity” built around 1696, after the destruction led by the terrible earthquake of 1693, here you will taste the best “Granita” and “Brioche” of Catania in one of the historical bars of the city.

At 6.30 pm appointment at the port of Catania to take the bus for Pozzallo to take the Catamaran and arrive in Malta at 11.15 pm
