Description
The island of Ortigia is the oldest part of Syracuse, a place that seen the succession, in over three thousand years, of important expressions of the major civilizations of the Mediterranean. In just over a square kilometre there are Greek temples and Christian churches, Swabian, Aragonese and Baroque palaces, courtyards, Arab alleys, shops, modest houses and large public buildings.
The itinerary starts from Piazza Emanuele Pancali, 8, Ortigia SR (in front of the Sushi restaurant). Continuing towards Via dell'Apollonion you can admire the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the oldest stone temple built by the Greeks in the west.
The guided tour will continue towards the center of the island passing through Piazza Archimede with the beautiful Fountain of Diana.
After a short walk through the alleys you will arrive at Piazza Duomo, surrounded by the Cathedral, the City Hall (or Palazzo Vermexio) and the Palazzo Beneventano.
