This summit crater trek is one of the most complete and spectacular experiences you can have on the volcano.
The departure is from Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,900?m above sea level on the southern slope of the volcano, the main access point to the summit craters from Etna South.
To begin the ascent, you will take the cable car followed by a 4x4 minibus, which will bring you up to 2,900?m. From here, accompanied by a certified alpine/volcanic guide, you will continue on foot along a high-altitude trail up to the highest permitted points, which may vary depending on volcanic activity.
During the summit crater trek, you will have the chance to walk up to Etna’s spectacular summit, observing the main active craters up close: Bocca Nuova, Voragine, Southeast Crater, and Northeast Crater. A powerful and intense experience that allows you to witness the raw force of the volcano up close.
The descent is entirely on foot, passing through areas affected by the most recent eruptions and secondary craters formed over time. Always accompanied by the guide, you will descend to 2,500?m, where you will take the cable car back to the starting point.
This summit crater trek allows you to truly reach the top of Etna in small groups, in a unique and breathtaking natural setting. If weather and volcanic conditions allow, the activity runs daily and lasts about 6 hours in total.
