The excursion will take you to explore the majestic summit craters of Mount Etna.
Departure is from the Hotel Rifugio Sapienza at an altitude of 1,900 meters, located on the volcano’s southern slope, just north of Nicolosi.
You’ll start by taking a cable car, followed by a special off-road minibus ride that will take you up to 2,900 meters above sea level. From there, accompanied by a licensed alpine/volcanological guide, you’ll hike to the highest altitudes allowed (depending on volcanic activity). You’ll have the unique opportunity to walk up to the breathtaking summit of Etna, where the active craters—Bocca Nuova, Voragine, South-East Crater, and North-East Crater—unfold in all their imposing beauty.
On the way down, you’ll explore the sites and craters of recent eruptions. The descent will be entirely on foot, led by your expert guide, down to 2,500 meters, where you’ll once again take the cable car back to the starting point.
This extraordinary excursion allows you to reach the summit of Europe’s highest active volcano in small groups, surrounded by a truly breathtaking landscape. If weather and volcanic conditions are favorable, the excursion runs daily and lasts about 6 hours. The difficulty level is medium/high, with a 400-meter elevation gain to be covered on foot, accompanied by the guide.
